Land fills are big rotting piles of rubbish.

Gas comes out of rotting stuff, mainly methane, this can be burnt to make energy but generally not, it escapes and adds to the green house gases.

Also juices (leachate) seep out of the bottom of a land fill and if not properly contained (by a clay barrier for example) and get in to ground water, which human may wish to drink.

To avoid waste going to landfill you should recycle more and use use home compostable packaging where necessary, better still try and avoid all packaging. . . .very tricky.
