Regarding a person's "walk with the Lord"... The Bible says:

"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3)

In order for us to "walk with the Lord"... we must come into agreement with our Sovereign's Commandments in our heart and in our deeds.

"Ye are My friends, IF YE DO WHATSOEVER I COMMAND YOU." (John 15:14)

And in order to know what He commands of us... we have to "read His book," the Bible. He inspired its Words to be written down to reveal Himself to us, that we might obtain His Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding.

"The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom: and the Knowledge of the Holy [One] is Understanding." (Prov.9:10)

"SEEK YE OUT OF THE BOOK OF THE LORD, and READ..." (Isa.34:16).

"Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek Judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

"Come now, and LET US REASON TOGETHER, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. IF YE BE WILLING and OBEDIENT, ye shall eat the good of the land..." (Isa.1:16-19).

"Walking closer with the Lord" is a "learning process" that only comes with "practice." Like a toddler learning to walk; you stumble, you fall, you get back up and keep trying... and don't give up.

Familiarize yourself with His Word... and pray always to become "willingly obedient" to His Commandments... to become God's "friend."

"...thou, Israel, art My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of ABRAHAM MY FRIEND." (Isa.41:8)

"Because that Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My Commandments, My statutes, and My laws." (Gen.26:5)

In order for us to "walk with the Lord" [at all]... we have to start agreeing with what He says; instead of arguing about it and fighting Him on everything. If we can bring ourselves to do that... "agree with Him" -- then "the walk" begins... the "closeness" follows and the "friendship" grows.
