This is a tough question. The answer is what does the public really want to know. The police work with the bowels of society, which hardly any one wants to admit exists. The accountbililty comes from the internal affairs division when a complaint is issued.
If the pulic wants more accountability then they have to admit that bad people exist and they have to be willing to let the police do their jobs within the letter of the law to enforce the rules. Once that is accomplished then the public can understand that the police do have 100% accountabilty to the public.
Police can be more accountable to the public by implementing measures such as mandatory body cameras for all officers, creating stricter guidelines for the use of force, establishing independent civilian oversight boards with the power to investigate and address complaints against officers, and conducting regular public forums where community members can voice their concerns and provide feedback. Additionally, promoting transparency in police operations and ensuring timely and thorough investigations into alleged misconduct are crucial for fostering trust and accountability.
Since 2004, the police have been accountable to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). Since 2012, Police forces also answer to the local Police and Crime Commissioner who is elected every 3.5 years by the people.
