Human civilization is full of societal and physical problems that remain unresolved today. Civilization still functions because we work around these problems, but solutions to these problems and improvements to solved problems can make life better in the future. Proper research using the scientific method is important to gathering reliable information and the best available ideas to solve the problems efficiently and create theories that can be applied to future similar problems.
In a broard sense I think that research is a means to expand the knowledge of humankind. Now one can get quite philosophical about this in deciding on the benefit thereof as knowledge can be of harm to man. Therefore I would suggest that research therefore is the act of searching for the truth in an altruistic sense and so doing benefits man by improving mankind in all aspects of the way in which we live and interact with the world.
