put your foot on the brake pedal and press down while some one looks at the brake light to see if it lights up
Check the brake light switch.
If it is the tail lights, it is the headlight switch. If it is the brake lights, it is probably the brake light switch. I really don't know how to replace the bulb in the 3rd light. change the brake light bulb first it may be shorted causeing the other problem
With all lights turned off, have someone step on the brake pedal. The bulb that illuminates is the break light bulb.
=I don't know about the brake lights. I know that most cars, when you turn it off and get out, the head lights and main backlights stays on for a while but then goes off. The brake lights? Maybe it's the way that car is or something is wrong with the brake or you have it on wrong.=
Look at your brake pedal where it connects under the dash. The problems you are having are both related to the brake pedal. There is a safety feature that won't allow you to shift your tranny until you have applied the brake, and since your brake lights are not coming on, there is either an electrical connection or a mechanical connection that is not working.
might have a short in the wiring to the light socket!! same happen to me...
I would check the bulbs in the tail lights first. Your Brake switch is working ,because of the third brake light is coming on.Ususally all the brake lights are on the same fuse.... Thanks DomAnswerCenter window light is on a separate circuit. Manufacturers did that so you don't lose all the brake lights at once. Check connections at brake switch and fuses. If ok look for broken wire in harness...............good luck, Mike
Sure: you don't have a complete electrical circuit to working bulbs. Are the bulbs good? Fuse? Have you checked the ground wire at the taillights? Often on older vehicles the ground connection becomes rusted and the lights will stop working. Have you verified that voltage is present in the tail light wire? Sometimes a faulty connection somewhere between the switch and the tail lights will cause the lights to fail. Have you verified that the headlight switch is functioning properly? While Brake lights are controlled by the brake light switch (part of the brake pedal) and the turn signal switch, tail lights are controlled by the headlight switch. Track down which part isn't working right and then you'll know. BTW, I THINK the tail lights are on the same fuse circuit as the dash lights.
Fix your brake lights and this problem will go away. Didn't know the brake lights were out did you? May be a fuse or the switch.
Try changing the light bulb
check under the hood of the vehicle...there should be a rectangular or square box with fuses there...there is also one under the dash of the vehicle. If it isn't the fuse check the bulbs... check the switch under the dash where the brake pedal rests in may need adjusting, broken, or just stuck in and not popping out when you apply the brake. Push it in and out severel times and see if the lights come on.
Ifyou're on the road behind them, get their license plate number and the make, model and color of the car, then call 911 to report them. If it's someone you know, then you can call your local police department or Sheriff's office to report this vehicle. You need to report this vehicle, whether you know the driver or not; you may very well save someone's life. You won't have to give your name, so you can do it anonymously.
