Meteor showers have nothing to do with stars. Meteoroids are pieces of space debris that can get caught by a planet's gravitational field and fall into the planet's atmosphere, if it has one. Whan that happens, they get hot and become luminescent. If they make it to the surface of the planet, they are called meteorites. If they burn up before reach the planet's surface, they are called meteors.

Stars do not need to be cleaned up. If a meteroid were to fall into a star, it would burn up well before causing any effect whatsoever.

When can you see shooting stars?

Look on the internet for "meteor showers" and you will find dates and what part of the sky to watch.

Where would the greatest amount of stars be found?

In a galaxy. Solar systems only have planets and also asteroid belts and meteor showers are not somewhere that you can find a lot of stars :).

The term shooting star refers to?

The term shooting stars refers to a meteor shower. At different times of the year, meteor showers are more visible on earth because they are closer to the earth's atmosphere.

Is this a fact or fantasy astronomers say there will be a shower of falling stars next Friday night?

While I cannot attest to a particular date, there is scientific basis for scientists predicting meteor showers. Meteors are small bits of rock and/or metal burning up in Earth's atmosphere. Meteor showers occur when Earth's orbit brings it through a cloud of such small objects, since scientists know where these clouds are, they can predict meteor showers.

What time does shooting stars appear?

No one can give you a specific time. Shooting stars or meteors, are bits of debris that hit the atmosphere and burn. Timing is impossible, however, there are meteor showers where the probability is higher that they will occur.

What is the weather like on the milky way?

Like a long (milky colored) cloud in the sky - that moves with the stars and not the wind.

When are the next falling stars due?

"Falling Stars" can happen at ANY time; including right now. There are several "meteor showers", which do happen on regular dates. They are named for the constellation from which they appear to originate. Meteor showers occur whenever the Earth passes through, or near, the path of an old comet. It is likely that the meteors we see are ancient comet dust striking the Earth. The next is apparently the Lyrids, on April 20.

What is the researched in each field astronomy hydrology meteorolgy geology?

Astro-> stars Hydo-> water Metero-> weather (it was believed that meteor showers affected weather) Geo-> Earth

Is meteor another name for shooting star?

Shooting stars are actually objects burning in the Earth's atmosphere. The name "shooting star" originates from ancient times (before advanced scientific investigation) when these burning meteors were though to actually be stars shooting across the night sky. Those that survive and crash onto the Earth's surface are then called meteorites.

What activity creates a meteor shower or falling stars?

Meteors are caused by bits of dust and dirt in space getting into our atmosphere and burning up. At certain times of the year we pass through dirtier parts, normally as we pass through the dust trail of a comet and then we see an increased amount of meteors. These are what we refer to as meteor showers.

Does a meteor shower happen when a meteor passes through the orbit of a comet?

A meteor shower happens when the Earth passes through a debris field of a comet's orbit or other similar celestial debris that may or may not have a regular cycle of occurrence. The term meteor shower refers to an unusual number of meteors visible per minute in the night sky as shooting stars. When you see a shooting star, you are actually seeing a meteor burn up in the outer reaches of our atmosphere. If you see 3 or more shooting stars (meteors burning up) per minute in the night sky, you are in a meteor shower. Most the time it is difficult to tell if you are in a meteor shower because of the low count per hour versus the count per minute. You can got to the web site for the American Meteor Society for listing and dates of various meteor showers.

What is bigger a star or meteor?

A star is much bigger. A meteor can be as small as a piece of dust. Stars are huge.
