When Rugby split and became Union (the original code) and league it was because northern clubs which were all union at the time found that their best players were being "encouraged" to move south of the UK (where Rugby started at the time) to seek work. Union was until 1995 a amateur game so no wages were paid for playing the game. In 1922 the drain on northern clubs became so bad that it demanded of the RFU that they pay players for each game.
