The thicker the tree ring the more tropical climate they lived in. The thinner the tree ring the colder and drier the climate was. 80,000,000 years ago tropical trees lived in Greenland. This tells us that Greenland was a tropical island 80,000,000 years ago.

The rings in a tree trunk are used to work out how old the tree is. There is a ring for each year the tree has lived so by counting the number of rings you can work out how many years the tree lived for. You can also roughly determine the weather in those years based on the thickness of the rings, more water and nutrients makes thicker rings and drier years result in thinner rings.
