It sounds like the carb needs to be cleaned , it is surging for fuel .
Yes.
I have cleaned the carb, put in a new petrol filter and renewed the diaphrgam of the petrol pump but it still surges.
Any other ideas please? Is there anykind of adjuster on the machine . if there is try adjusting . If there is a fuel inlet on top of carb , there should be a plate that you can take off and that is where the jets are , try cleaning them .
My engine is idling too high. How do I adjust the idle speed?
You can adjust the valves on your 17 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine by turning the adjustment screws. The adjustments screws will determine how much fuel goes into the piston chamber.
with a big freagin hammer
Try watching the video in the link below.
on the carb there is a plate that moves when you throttle up and returns to a stop screw when throttled down. This stop screw is the idle adjustment, turn it in until you reach your desired idle rpm.
There is no way to adjust the timing on a 17.5 Briggs engine. The magnet is on the side of the flywheel and there is only one way the flywheel can line up. All you can do is make wure that the coil is gapped correctly.
