It is the purpose of the church to point people to Jesus as Lord and Savior. This is done by preaching The Bible as the Word of God without error. That the Bible is absolutely true. It is the purpose of the church to train people to hear and obey the commands of Jesus. If a church does this then people will become true disciples of Christ.

Roman Catholic Answerfrom The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1997

618 The cross is the unique sacrifice of Christ, the "one mediator between God and men" But because in his incarnate divine person he has in some way united himself to every man, "the possibility of being made partners, in a way know to God, in the paschal mystery" is offered to all men. He calls his disciples to "take up [their] cross and follow [him], for "Christ also suffered for [us], leaving [us] an example so that [we] should follow in his footsteps." In fact Jesus desires to associate with his redeeming sacrifice those who were to be its first beneficiaries. This is achieved supremely in the case of his mother, who was associated more intimately than any other person in the mystery of his redemptive suffering.

Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.

779 The Church is both visible and spiritual, a hierarchical society and the Mystical Body of Christ. She is one, yet formed of two components, human and divine. That is her mystery, which only faith can accept.

780 The Church in this world it the sacrament of salvation, the sign and the instrument of the communion of God and men.

Was John closest to Christ?

------------------------ John's Gospel talks of a 'disciple whom Jesus loved' but does not identify that disciple. The second-century Church Fathers noticed that whenever the book talks about the disciple, it does not mention John and, on this evidence alone, decided that this disciple must therefore be John. Like all the New Testament Gospels, John's Gospel was written anonymously, but the Church Fathers came to the conclusion that the author must be the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' and, since they had decided this disciple to be John, the Gospel author was the disciple John. The second century reasoning was merely conjecture and is not accepted by modern biblical scholars. If the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' was closest to Jesus, we still do not know who that disciple was.

What does the Catholic Church share with Jesus?

The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ. It is not a human institution but a divine one, an extension and participation in the divine life of Jesus. As such, the divine elements of the Church are identified with Christ just as Her members are. To this end, the Church and Her Faithful share the divine life of Christ which Christ extends to everyone through the Church in the form of sanctifying grace. Sanctifying grace is a participation in the divine, so much so that some saints rightly proclaim that to be in the state of grace is to already participate in heaven. United to Christ through His vehicle the Church and sanctifying grace the Catholic Church shares: * the divine life of God Himself * participates in the infallibility of God * participates in the glory of God * the mission of God to save, care for and love all mankind * the identity of Christ - the Church and Christ are as a marriage, in which two flesh become one as per the teaching of St. Paul * the power of Christ; the Church is given authority to speak and rule in God's name as His representative. In addition, the Church uses the sacraments to confer and spread the saving grace of God The Catholic Church is the Mystical Body of Christ and the Bride of Christ.
