It sounds as though you're speaking of the BIOS Setup, which occurs before the computer boots into your operating system. To get into Setup, you'll need to reboot your machine--don't forget to either print this out or view from another computer.

Watch the boot screen, especially around the edges, for the proper key to enter setup. Common keys are F2 and Delete, so you can try those once your screen turns black on reboot.

If you're used to Windows, the BIOS screen may look a bit rudimentary. There is no mouse here; you'll need to use your arrow keys to navigate to the Security section of the BIOS.

Once there, look for the option for a boot-up password. Highlight it, press , and enter your desired password when it asks you.

CAUTION: On desktop systems, the startup password can be circumvented easily if one has physical access to the system. On laptops, BIOS passwords are considerably harder to crack. Do NOT forget this password. Make it something you can remember without writing down, and reboot and reenter the password several times over the next couple of days to make sure you remember it!
