Generally you breath slower when asleep.
Holding your breath while sleeping can be caused by various factors, including sleep apnea, anxiety, or even certain sleep positions. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts, leading to brief awakenings and disrupted sleep. Additionally, it could be a subconscious response to stress or discomfort. If this happens frequently, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation and potential treatment.

Surprisingly, dolphins can't breath underwater. They are mammals, just like humans and need air to breath. That's why they have a blowhole on the top of their head which they get air from. To go to sleep they turn half os their brain off to rest then the other half stays awake to concentrate on breathing and using their blowhole. Then, when that half is rested the other half goes to sleep while the one awake concentrates on breathing and using their blowhole.

Sea turtles can rest or sleep underwater for several hours at a time but submergence time is much shorter while diving for food or to escape predators. Breath-holding ability is affected by activity and stress.
