Every state is different, you should contact your local EMS service and see what the requirements are. You will have to first get certified as a First Responder and then get your EMT Certification.

How do licensure and certification differ from each other?
Generally speaking, a license is something you MUST have in order to lawfully do a particular activity. It's almost always issued by a governmental body. Certification just means somebody gave you a certificate. The question you should ask when you see "certified" is "certified by whom"? If someone is certified by Joe's Certification Agency (Motto: "If your check clears, you're certified") it doesn't mean much.

Where do Emt work?
An EMT (emergency medical technician) can work anywhere. You see them mostly working with paramedics on an ambulance but they can also be with a firedepartment. I have some EMT friends who work at factories. They are part of the special response teams. I am an EMT at the first responder level.

You can complete EMT lessons at your local hospital or a local college. You should contact both your local hospital or college to see if they offer the classes you want.
Is it a good idea to work as an EMT-basic before training for intermediate and paramedic?
That is up to you. Myself I went to college received my paramedic along with fire cert right when I graduated high school. Although there are a lot of Paramedics that did start out as a EMT-B or EMT-I before moving on further. If you are unsure if you will like the career then I would suggest that you get your EMT-B or see if you can do a couple of ride alongs to see if you would even like the career.
