What you need to use depends on the couch material, the padding under the material and the type of substance that made the couch need to be cleaned. Most furniture comes with some sort of label describing its contents and how to clean it. Otherwise start with something sold for the type of stain or dirt you need to remove, follow its instructions but first test in a hidden area to be sure it works and does no damage.
