I don't know if there is a button you can click to make the task manager appear on your desktop. I use CTRL-ALT-DEL on my xp to make the task manager come up on my desktop. Then I just click on the x to close it.

In systems running on windows xp and other previous versions of windows pressing Ctrl+Alt+del will produce the windows task manager window< in windows vista and windows 7 the same procedure is used but you will be redirected to a screen similar to the login screen with a list of buttons, the last button is labeled Task manager and clicking it will produce the windows task manager window.
got to task manager, and then processes. after that, end explorer.exe. now it keeps the background and you have to do everything from the task manager or CMD.

Right click the taskbar and choose Task Manager and click the Performance tab.
Some people have found that when they open Task Manager, the tabs and taskbar have suddenly disappeared. This behavior can occur if Task Manager is running in "tiny footprint" mode. If you accidentally double-click the empty space in the border around the tabs, Task Manager switches to this mode. To switch Task Manager back to its normal display mode, just double-click the top border of the window.
Try pushing Alt + F4.
