Drug abuse cannot, realistically be eradicated in society. In a single person, however, there are ways to get into a "sustained remission" state where the person is considered to have eradicated the substance abuse in their life for the time being.

1. a person needs to acknowledge to themselves and another human being that they have a problem with abusing drugs.

2. The person needs to reach out for help and accept the help that is offered, especially if it is from a person who is already IN a sustained remission from daily drug abuse.

3. Going to a "12 Step" meeting such as NA or AA and follow the program exactly as it is laid out will increase a person's chances of eradicating the drug abuse from their lives a great deal.

* (Narcotic's anonymous of Alcoholics Anonymous- which are the same program, but they were formed before society recognized that alcohol IS a drug, and it was felt that there needed to be a separation of different substances of abuse)

4.Once the person IS in a state of sustained recovery, they can help themselves and others who are still suffering by spreading the message of hope that anyone can get clean from substance abuse- this helps both the person whom is already clean by providing valuable information to those who desperately need it, and it keeps their recovery "up front"

(as they watch the person whom is still suffering and know that if they return to drug abuse, that is what is waiting for them.)

If one is speaking about society eradicating drug abuse, the first step is ALWAYS education about what drug addiction IS, and what it is NOT.

The next step is to create (at ANY cost) programs and intensive treatment for those who want the help and cease the natural inclination to throw drug abusers into jail without any "rehabilitation" opportunities

Until those things occur, eradication is not possible.

To prevent becoming addicted to drugs, you can get involved with sports, hang out with people you enjoy that don't do drugs, and try various fun activities. This way you'll see if you find a healthy free-time thing that relaxes you, and you enjoy doing.
