multiply by the decimal from of your state tax percentage and that's the tax. add that to the original cost and you have the final price. say you have a $100 dollar item and a 10% tax rate. 100 X .1= 10 so that is 10 dollars tax. 100 +10=110 the final price is $110 -Akilae

Multiply the percentage of taxes for your local area times the cost of the item before the taxes and that would be the amount of sales tax that you would add to the price of the item when you pay for it at the cash register. That would be your total cost of the item including the sales tax amount.

8%

.08 X 1 = 8 cents

.08 x 10 = .80

.08 X 100 = 8 dollars

If you sold an item for 20.00 and included sales tax and your sales tax rate is 7.3 what was the item price before sales tax?

The easiest way to understand the answer is to turn it around. If you wanted to calculate the item price plus tax, you would multiply the item price by 1.073. So, to back up to the item price from the item price plus tax, divide the item price plus tax by 1.073. $20.00 / 1.073 = item price before sales tax.
