It shouldn't. You should only use products manufactured for your firearm on that firearm.
If you look in some firearm resale guides, it will usually tell you the years the gun was manufactured. If you write to shooting magazines, they usually have the resources to find out the year of manufacture for you.

Yes. To be transferrable, the firearm must have been manufactured and imported prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (for imported weapons), or have been manufactured prior to the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986 (for domestically manufactured weapons, including imported weapons which were made 922r compliant with US-made parts and converted).
There may not be one. Federal law did not always require a serial number be present on a firearm. If that rifle was manufactured prior to the 60's, it may not have one.
Contact the maker, read all the books you can find, provide a detailed description of the firearm.

This is a 9mm Hi-power manufactured in 2001 (M=0 & Z=1). You can go to the Browning website and in the Support area find a link to "Date Your Firearm".
Have the model and serial number of your firearm handy, and call Ruger @ 603-865-2442, and they will reply (usually within a week) with the month and year your firearm was manufactured.
