Some reasons for low oil pressure is sludge build up, bad oil, clogged filter (Despite by-pass valve), bad oil pump.
A major reason is the main bearing are going bad. That means rebuild.
A possible temporary remedy, besides changing oil and filter is to replace oil pump with a heavier duty one.
The oil pan needs to be dropped to access most oil pumps. That can be easy on some older vehicles but can be very difficult on others.
Another possible solution, but risky, is to flush the engine oil. Only do this at a professional shop that specializes in this along with their other services.
Generally speaking low oil pressure is due to excessive wear inside your engine, unless the pressure sender, wiring or gauge is faulty, the only way to fix this problem is to replace or rebuild the engine.
Rebuild trans. Pay someone to do it too.
Fix the oil pressure problem and see what that does for you.
If it is a transmission problem, the best thing you can do is have the transmission rebuilt. That will fix the problem and prevent any further damage to the transmission.
Reconstruct, reassemble, fix
Running an additive like Lucas or a thicker oil will increase oil pressure to some degree. Keep in mind that if you have low oil pressure there is a problem with the engine. Most likely worn bearings causing too much clearance. A thicker oil can help take up this clearance and give you back some oil pressure, but it doesn't change the fact that you have a wear problem in the engine and nothing will fix that except a rebuild.
If a 2000 Kia Sportage was run for two days without a gas cap, the problem might be with the fuel vacuum pressure sensor that is located directly above the gas tank. Running the car without the gas cap may have caused a vapor lock.
I had the same problem with my 99 f-150. Turned out to be a sick-sensor problem. Replacment of the oil pressure sensor was the fix.
Try replaceing the filter or the fuel pressure regulator.
An oil leak problem probably is the sign of a problem in your oil pressure or it could simply be a slow leak. The problem can cost anywhere from $100.00 to $400.00 for an oil pressure problem.
