Theres no other way. Sadly, you have to do it old-fashioned. Just flat out talk to the guy as you would anyone else :)
Think of him as just another friend and just talk to him. Most of the times it works out! If your friends with someone that talks to him you could try to get your friend to say good things about you to him or see if they can talk to him and you just happen to be there :)
