Leave it alone for the first 2-3 days (don't attempt to pick it up as it will startle it and it will bite you because you are a stranger, and allow it to get used to its new surroundings) after that, start talking to your hamster by sitting by the cage and placing your hand around the cage so that he gets used to your scent and voice, then start feeding him treats from your hand (if you are worried he will bite you, temporarily wear gloves), then when he starts to get used to you place a cup in his cage (because it is new it will make him curious and he will eventually go inside) and scoop him out with the cup, then place your hand underneath the cup so he can crawl down then let him walk from hand to hand and gently cup your other hand over-top to carry him and not let him fall
it will abandon its baby.
A newborn hamster will not go half a day without eating.
when you feel like it.
No, they should not be caged together. A male hamster can be dangerous for a newborn animal, even one of its own.
Newborn pups are safe to handle when they start growing fur. The reason for not holding them when they're born is because if you get your scent on them the mother will think it's not her, therefore eat it. Ps: If your mother hamster has more babies then she can feed, take some babies out to give her a smaller litter to care for and nurse the other babies yourself. She will eat the babies if they're too much work for her. #jenna!<3
it is possible the older hamster might eat the baby...i wouldn't try it.
