I would suggest to start practicing slowly while paying great attention to your body response. I got this advice from Dom Famularo's book "It's your move" where he explains in great details the free stroke, which, in my opinion, is the foundation. Once you got it, you'll increase your speed by following his advice and practicing over and over.
