The bitch usually will do it all on her own. There is the odd time where the puppy is stuck. I've been told and have read that you can pull the baby by the shoulders or hips but be gentle a pups legs can actually come right off if you pull to hard. I was told by breeders that you can also you a lubricate to help the puppy come out. With my St.Bernard I helped her even break the sacks, she had 11 puppies and near the end she was getting very reckless and tired so I also tied dental floss about an inch from the belly then used dull sissors to cut the umbillical cords. I then rubbed the puppy vigourously with a towel to stimulate breathing if this doesn't fully work you can also blow slightly on there face or even use a baby (forget what its called) mucus remover.

In most cases when a dog is giving birth the best thing to do is to let nature take its course. However if the dog is having issue, you can assist be very slowly an gently pulling the pup outward.

They start ripping up their blankets to make a "nest." Their breathing gets really heavy and they start panting a LOT... then she walks around in circles (to get them moving) and then ka-boom... When my dog had her first litter her puppies were spaced out almost an hour apart with two of them being 15 mins apart.
