The .xls extension is the extension for Excel files up to version of Excel 2003. A computer will know what versions of Excel it refers to. It also makes it easier for users to identify types of files so they can find their Excel files when they are looking for them. If you did not use the correct extension, both users and the computer will find it harder to find them and the computer may not open them properly. The .xls extension is the extension for Excel files up to version of Excel 2003. You can make sure you know where it is saved, so it is easy to find. It can be on the recently opened list within Excel and also within Windows, so you can click on the file in either of those to open quickly.

Hey, I don't know if this is what you mean or not but, if you mean, 'what is the 'code' at the end of the files', then I think it is: .exl Hope this helps JJ x
Even if the cells inside the worksheet are empty, that is information for Excel to know and require space on your hard drive/ flash memory etc.

It depends on the size of the files. You can save 8 GB worth of files. It is like asking how many balls can I store in this box -- the answer depends on if you are storing ping pong balls or basketballs. Nobody can answer your question unless you know your file sizes. However, 8 GB is a lot of storage space. If you are using an 8GB memory stick to save your Excel files, you will have room for thousands of files. However, you will be able to store only about 254 files on the sitck unless you create a directory and store the files in the directory. This is because of a limitation with the file system to track the files.
Depending on your skill depends on whether you can do this kind of scripting. However reading a CSV file (low form of excel) is pretty simple. Simply know that a , separates the values and those with a " " are strings and those without are numbers and that a down space is between rows reading a CSV would be an easier task.
