Change the display properties to use a larger font size. Windows defaults to the smaller font, but you can choose medium or larger if you find it hard to read text. In Windows 7, right-click the desktop and click Personalise, then click Display in the lower left (in the See also section). This primarily affects common user-interface objects, such as title bars, button text and all the standard text controls. Most programs will conform to the chosen size, however not all programs fully support it, or are not engineered to handle it correctly.

Some browsers, such as Firefox, allow you to simply hit ctrl-plus (+) to increase the font for viewing and ctrl-minus (-) to decrease it. ctrl-plus (0) restores the original size. This only applies to web pages viewed in the browser, however. Note that the (+) and (-) are not the ones on the numeric keypad, but the ones on the top row above the letter keys.

Where a program permits it you can also adjust the font sizes used by that program. Check the program's options or preferences for fonts and appearance options. In cases where resizing the fonts is not possible, use the Magnifier tool (an accessibility tool, or ease-of-use tool). This temporarily enlarges a portion of the screen just as if you passed a magnifying glass over the text.

When all else fails, lowering the resolution of your monitor will increase the text size.

This is called font size. There are different methods in different word processing programs. I have not seen a way to change it on this page (but anyone who knows a way is welcome to add). In the latest (2007) Microsoft Word you can change font and font size on the Home Tab. In older versions of Word, it think it might be on the View menu.

To make words bigger globally, use the Display Properties dialogue to change the text size. In Windows 7, for instance, right-click the desktop, select Personalise. At the lower left, in the See also section, click Display. From there you can select Smaller, Medium and Larger text sizes. You will also see a link to the Magnifier tool that can temporarily magnify part of the screen. Desktop themes can also help make things easier to read, by switching to a high-contrast theme -- these are found on the first page of the Personalise dialogue.

More advanced options that permit you to change the actual fonts and sizes used in various elements can be found by clicking Window Colour (below the themes) and then selecting Advanced appearance settings. This dialogue contains a dynamic image that you can click to quickly select the item of interest and then change its properties. Once you're happy with the global layout, save it as new theme that you can recall should some errant software require you to switch to one of the standard themes.

Note that lowering the screen resolution can achieve the same sort of thing, but this reduces the number of available pixels, meaning you can't show as much on screen at once. However, if the global options are insufficient by themselves, lowering the resolution will help.

If you're happy with the global layout, but have problems reading text on web pages, either use the magnifier tool, or use the browser's built-in zoom facility. Most browsers respond to CTRL+[+] and CTRL+[-] to zoom in and out, while CTRL+[0] restores the default. However there will be a Zoom option in the browser's menu (press F1 to bring up the help file if you don't see it).

In other programs, look in the program's options for font options.
