There are several different methods. The most common is taking 220 minus your age and that gives you your maximum heart rate. For the best "fat" burning you want to work between 60% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. For cardio work between the 70% - 85%.

220 - (age) = MHR MHR x .60= fat burn MHR x .85 = cardio
