How can you open the back hatch glass on a 1987 gmc jimmy when you cannot get to it from the inside of truck?

I went thru this on a 2002 s-10 blazer. In this case their is a access hole thru the rear in gate panel. I had to peel the carpet back at the top-center of the panel. Behin the carpet in a knock out. It is about 3/8 of a inch tall and about 1 inch long. If you punch this out you will see a gold colored lever thru the hole. You can insert a screwdriver and slide towards the passengers side of the vehicle and the gate glass should pop open. Hope this helps, but remember this was on a 2002 yours may be a little different. yes it can be done... but take this into account, with the spare on the back door of the blazer/jimmy if you are bumped in any way the shock will break your rear window glass ($400.00) i removed mine.. think about it before you invest

Had this problem on my 95 recently, while on vacation. I was able to pull down the top of the tailgate panel from the inside, just low enough to push the actuator arm with a screwdriver and get the latch to release. This may break a small screw-mount on the panel at the top, but you can't tell on mine that it's broken. Found out the plastic actuator arm broke in half that unlatches the window. Dealer tried to convince me I had to buy the whole actuator for @$80. NAPA got me TWO in a pack for $5! Good luck with yours. Also if you have the keyless remote you can use the hatch button, and some have a button on the inside under the rear wiper switch.

2 bolts at the top, just unscrew them. un clip the defroster cables and unscrew the arms. be very careful putting the new one on. you wil need a couple of people to hold it for you it took 2 people to hold and me to screw the new one into place.
