To become a writer, you have to write... every day. That's all it takes. You don't need a degree; you don't have to go to a special college ... just write!

Now, to become a *published* writer, it takes a little more. You have to finish writing things, and submit them for publication, never give up, and learn to accept criticism as well as learning to improve your writing.

Advice from published authors:

The most important training, though, is to experience life as a writer, questioning everything, inventing multiple explanations for everything. If you do that, all the other things will come; if you don't, there's no hope for you.
Orson Scott Card

The pre-writing process is the stage where you think up ideas for your writing, where you plan how you are going to write, and where you outline and list all the things you want to include in your writing.

Here are some ways that you can begin the writing process:

  • Brainstorm - write down everything you can think of about the topic, or write down any topic you can think of. This does not have to be in complete sentences, or even grammatically correct - you are just jotting down whatever ideas you have without deciding if they are any good or not. You can go back and edit everything later!
  • Freewriting - set a timer for 5 minutes. Just start writing and write everything that you think of - if you have a thought "This is silly," then write "This is silly" on your paper or computer screen. Sometimes you just need to start writing in order to overcome the "writer's block" that is getting in your way!
  • Cluster or Mind Map - this is another brainstorming technique to help you come up with ideas. Write your main topic or idea in the center of a piece of paper. Now use the whole sheet to write down anything that you think of which is related to that idea - draw lines connecting different ideas that fit together, circle important ideas, and diagram what comes first in a series. The idea here is to draw a map of how everything is related.
  • Journal - keeping a personal journal is a great way to come up with ideas. Write down your thoughts, feelings, day-to-day experiences - and you will often think of something you'd like to write more about!
  • Ask Questions - asking questions is the best way to learn about something, and it's also a great way to come up with writing topics. Ask "who," "what," "where," "how," and "why" questions - ask questions that narrow a subject from general ("Writing") to specific ("How do you use prewriting to help with your writing?").
  • Make a List - this is more specific than brainstorming. First, write down your topic or idea; then, list every fact that you can find about the topic (do some research if you need to!).
  • Respond to Something - write your thoughts, feelings, ideas, or opinions of something you have read, heard, or seen!
Once you have your prewriting done, you can take a look at all your ideas and decide which ones you want to develop into a piece of writing.
