Circumcision or amputation of an important part of the penis should be considered as a last resort in the treatment of any condition. Phimosis is simply the foreskin being tight at its end. The foreskin is designed to close around the front of the penis when it is flaccid. The foreskin is deigned by nature to be able to be stretched and expanded to past back over the glans penis easily. exercises can be done to alleviate this problem, as well as cremes that can be applied to the prepuce to loosen and soften it. Just look up " how do I loosen my foreskin". it is well excepted that circumcision is not advantageous to health and less then 20% of the men of the world have been mutilated in this way, most for religious or cultural reasons.

Proper hygiene is the most important preventative measure. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the immature foreskin of boys not be forced back for cleaning. The only person who should clean and retract the foreskin is the boy himself.

Firstly, Phimosis is normal from age birth to 5-years-old and can be a condition up until becoming adult. The foreskin is fused to the glans and detaches naturally in time.

If by the time puberty is almost over there is no movement of the foreskin then it would be advisable to seek medical assistance from your GP or Urologist. 95% of males will find that they can retract the foreskin fully by the time they become an adult.

For most boys with phimosis It could be just a matter of some manipulation needed along with little gentle stretching exercises. Sometimes it can be useful to use a topical steroid cream to help soften the skin to be more pliable in movement over the glans with those exercises. Sometimes but less often, it could be that surgical assistance is needed. There are two methods which are either; Preputioplasty or Circumcision. Both of these methods are minor and are carried out in day hospital.

Preputioplasty is the incision of a small slit in the tight band of muscle type skin that runs around the penis. This allows it to loosen enough usually for the foreskin to move freely and retract fully.

Circumcision is the complete removal of the foreskin so that there is no movement over the glans. The glans will be unprotected after this surgery and will become less sensitive. Circumcision is being carried out less often these days as it is seen as a radical and extreme measure that should only be done when completely necessary.

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is too tight to retract. All boys are born with the foreskin fused to the glans and this doesn't detach until somewhere between 5 and adulthood. Everyone is different.

As the boy grows older and the penis grows in size so it detaches from the glans and is able to retract during an erection. Masturbation helps in this.

Keeping the glans and foreskin clean along with pulling it back to wash will help stop phimosis occurring, but damage to the penis sheath can cause scarring and phimosis to occur.

How can you tell if you have phimosis or am starting puberty late?

Phimosis (a tight foreskin) and late puberty are two different problems that have little to do with eachother. If you are 15 years old and do not have pubic hair or have not experienced any of the other changes of puberty such as underarm hair, penile growth, or voice change you should see your pediatrician or family doctor. While it is usually perfectly normal for some boys to go through puberty later than others, occasionally delayed puberty is due to an existing medical problem. If you can not pull your foreskin back to expose the head of the penis, then that would be called phimosis. Phimosis is easily treated by using a series of exercises to gradually stretch the opening of the foreskin along with a topical corticosteroid cream. This works in about 9 out of 10 cases of phimosis, meaning that you'll be able to keep your foreskin and avoid a painful circumcision.
