Picture files compatible with Windows Movie Maker:

.bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf

If your pictures are in one of the above mentioned formats, they can be imported into Windows Movie Maker.

> Open your Windows Movie Maker program
> Click the Import Media button (top right corner)
> Browse for and locate the picture you want to import
> Click Import button

The picture now appears in the Imported Media pane. Drag and drop the picture into the Storyboard or Time-line view. Click the Play button in the Preview pane to see results.

You can't overlay anything on a video in Windows Movie Maker except text (Title). No pictures unfortunately. You can do that on many other purchased video editing software applications, but not Windows Movie Maker.

You must download a video from the internet to your computer before you can use it in Windows Movie Maker. And too, the video must be in a video format compatible with the program:

.asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv

If the video is not formatted in one of the file name extensions listed above, you will need to convert it before it can be used in Windows Movie Maker.

To check the file name extension (format) of a video, right-click the file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. What extension is it?

The 'Newspaper' overlay is under Titles and Credits menu in Windows Movie Maker.

You do not add a picture/clip to the newspaper though. You add the newspaper overlay to the picture/clip:

> With your project on the Time-line view of Windows Movie Maker
> Click on Tools, then Tasks to get the Task pane up
> Click on Titles and Credits
> Choose "Title on Selected Clip"
> Add Text/Title (for the Headline on the Newspaper) in the space provided
> Click on Change the Title Animation
> Scroll down and select Newspaper from the list
> Click Add Title

The Newspaper overlay will appear in the Title Overlay track. Drag it under the picture/clip you want it to appear on.

It is nice to know there are so many creative individuals out there hoping to produce 'professional-looking' video. Unfortunately, these people will not be able to achieve this using Microsoft Windows Movie Maker.

Many Windows Movie Maker users don't realize that the program is a very basic video editing software application, with limited capabilities. The program comes bundled with the Windows OS software along with other applications such as Windows Mail, Photo Gallery, etc. Bundled software applications of any type rarely offer little more than basic functionality. Especially if they are bundled with an operating system at no extra cost.

If we stand by the general belief that "You get what you pay for," then you certainly can't expect much from a software application provided for FREE. But that does not mean Windows Movie Maker is a useless application entirely. In fact, the application is a great 'starter' program for beginners.

However, once a user masters the basics of video editing in Windows Movie Maker, the yearning for more advanced tools/options/features to work with becomes apparent. Creativity levels tend to increase, dictating the desire for additional features/functionality of video editing software programs, including innovative transitions/effects... such as 'Picture in picture'. Features like these are not available in Windows Movie Maker given the fact usually only an advanced user would want access to them.

Bottom line... If you cannot find a specific feature in a software application, if is very likely unavailable.

No, you can't do that in Windows Movie Maker. Sorry. That capability is standard in other (purchased) video editing software applications. But not in Windows Movie Maker.
