How can you read the codes for a 1986 Cutlass without hooking it up to a Dianostic Machine you know there is a way to short across two of the terminals and get the reading but can't figure it out?

jumper wire between a&b terminal on your aldl conector. turn ignition on and watch your chech engine light, this will flash once and then twice. this is the #12 and means that system is working okay. It will flash this 3 times and then it will start flashing trouble codes.
