The first thing you need to do is have it authenticated. A certified dealer can give you a first-level evaluation as to whether or not the coin is genuine; there are many counterfeit dollars on the market today. If their opinion is that it is real, it should then be professionally graded by one of the major grading services such as PCGS. The cost will be worthwhile because even slight variations in condition can add or subtract thousands of dollars from the value of a scarce piece such as a 1796 dollar. Once graded, the coin can be sold at auction or through a dealer on consignment. I would hesitate to suggest selling it yourself because of the amount of money involved; even in the lowest grade a genuine 1796 dollar retails for around $1500 as of 09/2009, and uncirculated ones can approach $100,000.

July 2, 2009 There were no US Trade Dollars minted in 1796. They were made from 1873 to 1885. However, if you meant a 1796 silver dollar, only 72,920 were made and I see them being priced from about $3500 to $6000 depending on their condition.
