No it is not an interference engine. I personally had a timing belt break in my 94 Escort LX while the car was being driven and it was simply replaced.
No it doesn't have an interference motor. This means if the timng belt breaks the valves won't go through the pistons.
Use a 1/2 or 3/8 breaker bar to relieve tension on belt tensioner to remove and replace belt - the automatic belt tensioner is the only adjustment
