If you're caught in a volcanic eruption, the best thing you can do is evacuate the area immediately, and keep away from the downwind area of the volcano, and surrounding valleys. Keep a battery-operated radio at hand as in any natural disaster, for news and emergency information.

If you cannot leave the area because you are indoors, bring in any pets or livestock, and close all doors and windows. If you are caught outdoors during the volcano, try to get indoors. If you are by a river, try to move out of the river valley and upstream to avoid mudflows, especially if the water is rising.

Wear goggles and a dust mask to avoid inhaling harmful volcanic ash particles, and protect your skin with long pants and jackets or sleeved shirts.

Do not turn on automobile engines during ashfall, as the ash will clog the engine of your vehicle.

don'ts of volcano eruptions

1. If out side don't stay outside

2. Do not lie on the ground

3. Do not enter house after told to leave

Do of volcanic eruptions

1. Leave immediately when told to

2. Listen to your radio or TV for advice and information

3. Plan where you will go if you have to evacuate and how your family will meet

I think the best answer with today's technology is to leave when the evacuation notice comes in or don't live on or near an active volcano.

Other than that

1. don't breathe in the toxic gas

2. don't breathe in the ash

3. don't step in the lava

4. get out of the way of the lahar (good luck with that since they ash, mud, water mixture can travel in excess of 150 kph)

5. watch for effects of earthquakes caused by eruption

if you are outside stay in swimming pool

Go to live somewhere far away from volcanoes. There is little that anyone can do to stop a volcano doing what it does.
