If you found it in changed it is circulated. If not, simply look to see if it has lots of ware. If it does it is circulated.
If it has been circulated about 3 cents or so. If uncirculated it could be worth a dollar or two.
I took a while researching and I found that a 1922 D wheat penny Un-circulated is worth about 75 $. Circulated but in very good condition (as in looks to never have been touched) is worth about 18 $ Then depending on condition it can be worth anything from 2 to 17 $.
The US Mint did not produce any silver wheat cents in 1957. If you have one it has been coated with something after it left to mint. Coins such as this have very little numismatic {fancy word for coin collecting} value.
A circulated penny is a coin that has been used in transactions and shows signs of wear or damage from being in circulation. An uncirculated penny is a coin that has not been used in transactions and is in pristine condition, usually taken directly from mint packaging.
Sorryno such thing as asilver penny
Wheat cents were struck from 1909 to 1958, but the denomination itself has been made since 1793 so there are far too many years to try to write out in detail. If you're referring to a modern Lincoln Memorial cent, most of these have little or no added value in circulated condition. If you have specific dates in mind, please post a new question with that information.
The mintmark can only be a "S" or "D" no F's have ever been used. The coin is so very common circulated coins are 2 cents, one that looks like new is 10 cents.
Because of the lack of a decimal point, I don't know if the question is asking about an $80.00 or $8,000.00 dollar value. The 1957 Wheat Cent is a very common coin. To date, the highest known certified grade for this coin is MS-67 Red, less than 40 have been graded at this level with market values in the $2,500.00 range.
Any signs of wear indicate coin circulation. Look at the year the penny was made, and compare the it with the wear. You can definitely tell if a penny has been used just by looking at it.
Please look at the coin again zinc coated steel cents were struck in 1943 only. It's possible a 1946 has been plated with zinc.Values for 1943 steel cents are 5 to 10 cents for average circulated coins.
"Uncirculated" means a coin that hasn't been in circulation i.e. does not show any wear even to its high points. The key is "wear". A uncirculated coin can be a dark color and have many scratches and spots but it shows no wear.
Assuming your 1917-S Lincoln cent is genuine, then in average circulated condition, it's worth 30-50 cents. Lighter (in color) and less shine probably means it has been cleaned improperly and most collectors would not be interested.
