How can you tell if a horse is over weight?

One easy way is if you call your vet and ask him/her to see if your horse is a healthy weight then he or she will more than likely have a scale that is made for measuring the weight of a horse because that is what i did with my horse.

One way to find the weight with a regular measuring tape is to:

Measure the circumference of your horse's girth. Starting behind your horse's wither lay a measuring tape around your horse's barrel, just behind the elbow and around the narrowest part of his trunk. Write down this number.

Measure the body length of your horse. Place one end of the measuring tape in the center of your horse's chest, pull it straight along her side and end in the center of the tailbone. Write down this measurement.

Convert both measurements (girth and length) from inches to centimeters by multiplying the number of inches by 2.54. For example, for a horse with a girth that is 75 inches, you would multiple 75 times 2.54, which equals 190.5 centimeters.

Square (multiply by itself) the measurements for the girth. Do this after you have already converted the measurement in to centimeters. If you are not a math wiz, this is easiest to do using a calculator.

Multiple the circumference of the girth squared (in centimeters) by the number of the body length (in centimeters).

Divide this number by 11,877. This will give you the weight of your horse in kilograms.

Multiple the final numbers by 2.2 to get your horse's weight in pounds; for instance, if your horse weighs 578 kilograms he would weight 1,721 pounds.

*do not use metal measuring tapes against your horse; if you do not have a soft measuring tape, use a piece of string and then lay that string against a metal measuring tape to see the measurement.

To calculate a horses weight you will need several things including, a pencil, paper, calculator and a seamstress' measuring tape. After you've collected those items you can begin by measuring the horse from the point of shoulder to the point of buttock and then write that number down. Next measure around the hear girth area of the horse and write that number down. After that you just have to do a simple math equation on the calculator to get your answer. Girth X Girth X length divide by 330. The final number will be the horses weight in pounds. This formula is quite accurate.
