Different authorities give different criteria for how to recognise a prophet. Here are three that we find in The Bible.
- The prophecies must come true. If they don't, the prophet is false. While this is a very sound and objective quick test, not all prophecies are about predicting the future. It's all very well to test "Tyre will cease to be a city and become a fishing village," but how do you test, "The twelve gates of Paradise will each be like a giant pearl"?
- The general message from the prophet must in some way anticipate the crucifixion of Jesus or, if he lives after the time of Jesus, must look backwards to the crucifixion of Jesus and understand its importance.
- The prophet must be in a right relationship with God. While this is a more difficult criterion to assess objectively, he not only lives a virtuous life, but has a general attitude of recognising his own sinfulness and constantly repenting.
Muslims view
The second point above is not an evidence that someone is a real prophet of God. Otherwise, God prophets Noah, Abraham, Moses, and many others are not real God prophets. Quran is the Muslims holy book that reflects real God words revelation to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) states that Jesus (peace be upon him) was neither killed nor crucified but was raised up to the Heavens by God the All-Mighty and that Jesus will be back to earth per God will.
