they will test it for you at napa.
Check the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine off and running. The voltage should increase and be greater than 12.
The owners manual on a Ford Focus will probably tell you that towing anything with the focus is a bad idea.
If you will tell us what the problem is, with the Ford focus, then perhaps someone will have the answer for you. I can give no guarantee.

Usually the appropriate warning light on the dash will come on if the alternator is not producing current. If you don't trust the warning light, take a volt/ohm meter and (making sure it is set on the DC reading scale) connect it across the output terminals of the alternator to determine if any current is being produced.
Go to NAPA or AutoZone, they will tell you.
Someone has to get into computer. Get a mobile auto locksmith off of Craigslist (under services) it will take about 5 mins. tell him pats activated and you need a reset

From what I can tell, the rattle is most likely coming from your alternator, Take It In!
There is an easy way to tell if your Ford Focus is a single or dual cam shaft. If it is single, it will have one gear with a belt around it.

normally a alternator that is from the factory will have motorcraft somewhere on it, if it has been rebuilt it should have a sticker somewhere on it from the shop that rebuilt it
