The simplest way is to ask questions regarding it's origin and how the person who claims to own it came to possess it. This requires intuition, observation and some guess work. If the item has a serial number or other identification you can check with law enforcement and ask that they compare it to items reported stolen. When in doubt, don't accept it!
If you're looking to buy an item you can always ask for for the serial number, then call your local police station and ask them to run a check on the serial number to see if it is stolen merchandise.

Most people have a tattle-tell sign when they are lying, if you know what that sign is then the next time your friend comes over act like you are looking for the missing items, then as if they've seen it. After you ask them carefully watch for their tattle-tell sign to see if it shows up. I also heard from a lie detector and body language expert that when a person lies they unknowingly look up and to the right, and when they are telling the truth they look straight or to the left.
