With great difficulty.

Pretty much the only choice is to look for other signs. If the car has been driven a lot there are other things that'll begin to wear out, like the driver's seat upholstery, the rubber pads on the pedals etc.

How did the odometer change over time?

The odometer records the total amount of miles your car has traveled. As you drove the car more, more miles got put on the car, and so it changed from what it used to be to the amount of miles traveled now.

1990 Pontiac Tempest the speedometer reads more than the vehicle is travelling and the odometer accumulates more miles than what's driven. For example I drive two tenths the care shows three tenths.?

Sounds like you probably have smaller diameter tires then specified by GM. Check the specs for your recommended tire and wheel size for your car.

What does the odometer of an automobile measure?

It displays the total miles or kilometers traveled by the drive wheels on the vehiclesince the odometer was installed or reset. Wikipedia has more info in their odometerpost, and a link is provided.Strictly speaking, the odometer of an automobile counts revolutions of the wheels. The practical application is in its use for measuring the distance the car has traveled. Our crack automotive engineers know how to derive distance from wheel revolutions, because they know the diameter of the tire, and they know how to use the diameter to calculate how far the wheel rolls with each revolution.

How do you reset the maintenance required light on a 2005 Toyota Camry?

This light will come on when after about 4500 miles since last oil change and a reset. It will stay on for a few seconds after you start the engine until you reach 5000 miles, in which it will stay on constantly until reset. To reset the light, insert the key and turn to "ACC". Hold down the odometer button while turning the key to the "ON" position. Continue to hold the button and watch the odometer. Dashes in the odometer window will count down until there are no more dashes in the odometer window.

Do bigger tires effect the speedometer How do you calculate the difference I had 30 inch tires and now have 33 inch tires?

YesPutting larger diameter tires on any vehicle will affect the speedometer and odometer readings. If you know the revolutions per mile for the original tires and the larger tires, you could calculate the speed difference. If they are already on the vehicle, you can also drive down the highway, set the speed at 60 MPH and measure the time it takes to drive between mile markers. One mile at 60 MPH takes 60 seconds. If it is not 60 seconds between mile markers, the difference is the speedometer error. AnswerYour tires are 10% larger than the car thinks. Therefore, you travel 10% more than your car recognizes. This has two effects: Your actual speed is 10% MORE than what your speedometer is reflecting. (When your speedometer reads 60, you are actually traveling 66)10=11, 40=44, 100=110 etc.Your actual mileage is 10% MORE than what your odometer is reflecting. (When your odometer reads 100 miles, you have actually traveled 110)So when you see a cop doing a speed trap, remember to slow down accordingly. When you sell your car, don't forget to disclose that you have larger tires and that the odometer should read more miles than it does.
