You can tell the difference by the color of the egg. Deadeggs have this creamy color. A dying egg is formed by when parts of the egg is becoming white. On the other hand an alive egg is clear (see through) it may have little white spots but that may not be the dying warning. *Warning* Dead eggs spread killing many other eggs. It's virus can spread among. I know this because i have done a project on this experiment.

I can't tell you about all salmon but I know that Atlantic Salmon number are being reduced by Salmon farms, as they cause a massive increase in the amounts of paratsites and disesases which are caught by migrating salmon. Over fishing is also a big cause of fish numbers dropping.
