Say the word with one syllable louder than the others. If it sounds right, that's the accented syllable. If it doesn't, then try another. EX: ACCented, not accENTed or accentED

Keep in mind that the English language is eighty percent irregular. Furthermore, some words have more that two syllables, and are accented on a later-than-first-or-second syllable. As a general rule, I would tend to accent the first syllable of a two-syllable word, and I would have to put on my thinking cap to list exceptions, such as except and accept. Joan in Houston
