Their paws can give you an idea of how big they are going to be, and their ears are usually closest to their color when they mature. The best way of telling is seeing their parents and what they look like.

Well, when my golden retriever was 2 years old, I bought a miniature pinscher puppy. From what I noticed, the best way to introduce them is by holding the puppy in your arms and slowly allowing the older dog to sniff the puppy, but don't rush it or the puppy will get scared. Also, have someone standing behind the older dog in case he attacks or something, if your dog is temperamental. As long as you take it slow, there (hopefully) shouldn't be a problem :)
