By 'limp' i presume you mean that the horse is lame. If this is so, it can come from a variety of sources. It could be something in the hoof itself, or something in relation to the leg. Well it depends on how the horse is limping, for instance: Is the horse putting any weight on the hoof? When you trot the horse away from you is i moving stiffly in the hindquarters? When you run your hands up and down the horses leg, does the horse show any signs of pain at certain spots? And you should always check the leg opposite the one tht horse is limping on to see if the constant pressure of having to bare both sides weight on it is effecting it otherwise you could end up with a horse lame on both accounts!

Can a horse limp because it has no horse shoes?

Horses can limp for many reasons. Some horses require shoes and others do not. Horses doing work harder on their feet, like jumpers, may require shoes while others may not. If a horse is limping, it is not necessarily because they need shoes and do not have them. This is not to say that foot injuries or soreness cannot come from not being shod, it's just not always the cause.

What do you do to tell where a limp is?

Determing what limb a lameness originates from can be difficult as horses may compensate by changing the gate of the diagonal leg (so if it's the front right, it may appear to be the back left). Determining which leg it is can take several different steps including trotting on soft and hard ground and working in circles. Having someone trot the horse away from you and to you can be helpful along with trotting the horse in a straight line across in front of you.

How does an abscess affect a horse's ability to run?

Abscesses impede the horse's ability to walk normally. Abscesses are very painful, so horses will limp and will not run when they are in pain. However if the horse is given bute (a pain killer), the horse won't limp as much.
