Unfortunately breaking up with someone is always emotional and can be hurtful and sad but it is always best to be polite, straight forward and honest, don't try to make up excuses or say things you think he wants to hear just keep it simple and let him have some time to think about it and don't be upset if he avoids you for awhile as he may be hurt.
