A Ukulele is pretty inexpensive, as little as $20 in most places and that is more than enough to get you started. There are hundreds of YouTube videos that can help you learn to string, tune and play the ukulele.
Share a couple of good ukulele videos with your dad and say you want to learn to play like that! I would recommend Jake Shimabukuro as a serious musician and not a comedy routine. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain is another good one to share. And check YouTube for videos of ukulele players doing one of your dad's favorite songs.

The ukulele can be set up to play differently, depending on the style of music you want to play. The standard tuning commonly used today is the C with the strings being G' CEA. D tuning on a uke is with the strings being A, D, F#, B

If you are looking for music to listen to, there are many Hawaiian music CD's available. YouTube contains many videos of ukulele music, complete with instructions on how to play them. There are some great performances out there as well! Look for the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain! They are simply amazing! How many chords do you have to learn on an ukulele?
It depends entirely on what you want to do with it. If you want to finger pick, there is no reason to ever learn a chord, though it would certainly help a lot! You can play a large number of songs with as few as two chords, and many popular songs only require four chords. Some of the most common that can take you a very long way would be: C, D, D7, G, G7, A, F
