You need an Ethernet hub. Connect your modem and both computers to the hub, and both of your computers will have a connection available.
The OS's only affect the connection settings on each computer.
Apple Macs and other types of computers can be networked together and can happily share a modem.
It depends on model. Some modems come with a wireless router. If yours has wireless interface, you will able to connect your computers wirelessly. Usually what you have is a modem with one LAN port. If you want to connect your 3 computers to the same modem you need to get a wireless router. It will allow you to connect your computers using wireless or cable. Switch in such case might not work because of internet provider policy.

laptops and computers dont come with modems. They come with wireless adapters that are essentially the same for both laptop and desktop, that can connect to modems. If you have a purchased usb modem for your laptop, that is what is accessing the internet. If you do not, the modem, say at Starbucks, is accessing the internet for you...and you are connecting to it.
Using two different computers, it's no impossible to do it on the same computer.
A modem enables computers to communicate over lines of information whether it be telephone, RS 232, USB, Cable, satellite, or fiber optics. Although the technology for each one is different, they all essentially do the same thing.
One can purchase an ethernet hub which would allow two computers to share a link with the same modem. This will simeotaneously link both computer from a up using a tcp/ip protocol.

Wireless routers are a necessary piece of equipment that you need if you have several computers in your home and you all want to have internet service at the same time. A modem is what connects your computer to your ISP DSL or cable line. You will need BOTH in your home if you all want to use your computers at the same time whilst being in different parts of the house and thus that is the main benefit of being wireless.
Yes just plug the cables into the modem and it should work the same
A LAN world means if someone is playing Minecraft using the same modem/router as you, they can come into your world and play with you.
It is called "IP address". A typical example, using private addresses, is:IP address: 10.0.0.5Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0Default gateway: 10.0.0.1IP address will be different for different computers, but typically all will start with the same 3 bytes, in the example, "10.0.0".
