Most household goldfish from pet stores are fairly strong and the majority of their deaths are caused by the owner. Here's a list of causes of goldfish deaths...
1. Untreated tank water. Goldfish can only survive in water that has been treated for chlorine and is at a suitable temperature.
2. Lack of filtration. Goldfish can eventually be poisoned by their own waste, so
filters and bacteria that grow naturally in the tank helps break down toxins.
3. Starvation. Goldfish have been known to trap each other and sometimes steal each other's food up to the point of starvation. Though rarely, owners can neglect to feed their fish until they die. This does not happen often as many types of goldfish can survive for over a week without food.
4. Ich and other parasite infections. If water conditions are not ideal, the slime coat of the goldfish can be compromised. This can lead to sicknesses such as fin rot, ich, etc.
5. Old age. Goldfish rarely live out their entire time of 6-10 years in a tank, but it happens. At that point they eventually die of old age.

I had several small tadpoles in a tank- each less than 1/2 ich long. I added 2 goldfish who promptly ate all the tadpoles. One goldfish died, the other thrived. I suspect the one goldfish died from overeating but I can't rule out parasites, bacteria or other problems from the tadpoles although I would have expected the other to get ill as well. I guess the one certain thing is that if you like the tadpoles, don't add goldfish. S.

it couold have been or as goldfish have no memory it is likely it either had a problem of its own or had got used to having another goldfish to bump into that it didnt realise it wasnt there.
