in a ceiling fan the capacitor is used to give the starting torque to motor for run. because we need a rotating type of magnetic field to the motor to run. once the motor run it become running even we disconnect the capacitor. by using the capacitor we produce the electrica difference(phase angle) between the two current taking by capacitor and the motor winding.

∙ 12y agoIn general in any rotating machine for production of torque a uni directional flux is required. But in case of fan we give AC supply so this AC supply produces an alternating flux. To make it uni directional we use an auxillary winding and a capacitor connected in series and this entire combination is connected in parallel to main winding.
this makes the flux uni directional.
and afterwords the capacitor can also used to improve the power factor.
