The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) allowed members to practice polygamy (having more than one wife) between about 1840 and 1890. Polygamy was banned in the Mormon church in 1890 beacuse the United States government seized all the church's assets until they would end the practice. Since 1890, members found to be practicing polygamy are excommunicated.

Brigham Young died in 1877, 13 years prior to the time when polygamy was banned. Therefore, he and others who lived at that time were able to have multiple wives.
